CODE OF CONDUCT

Our Commitment

As a school, we are committed to providing a space that is safe, equitable, respectful, and challenging. We honor the traditions of capoeira while supporting its evolution into a practice that is actively inclusive for all.

Code of Conduct (Non-Negotiable)

All participants—students, teachers, guests, and observers—are expected to treat one another with respect. Discrimination or harassment of any kind will not be tolerated, including based on cord level, race, ethnicity, nationality, ability, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, appearance, political views, or economic status.

Harassment includes, but is not limited to:

  • Derogatory, sexist, sexual, or demeaning comments, jokes, gestures, or behavior
  • Unwanted sexual advances, propositions, or favoritism
  • Sharing inappropriate or demeaning images or media
  • Harassing photography, filming, or recording
  • Invasive or intimidating physical contact
  • Retaliation following a complaint
  • Assault or any unlawful behavior

Community Responsibility

Capoeira is a community practice, and we all bring lived experience, conditioning, and implicit bias into the space. We ask everyone to reflect on how their actions impact others and to join us in making capoeira more inclusive.

We encourage ongoing reflection, including:

  • What biases do I bring into capoeira?
  • What responsibility do I carry as a teacher, high cord, or community member?
  • How do power dynamics affect my behavior and decisions?
  • How do we address conflict in a respectful and accountable way?

Reporting Concerns

We recognize that power imbalances can make speaking up difficult. Our priority is to support those who experience or witness misconduct.

Concerns may be reported:

  • In person to any trusted teacher or student advocate
  • In writing (anonymous options available) via our grievance submission form or comment box
Reports will be handled case by case and may result in actions ranging from a warning to suspension, expulsion, removal from events, or legal action if necessary.

Expectations

This Code of Conduct applies to:

  • All classes, events, workshops, and rodas
  • Event-related social gatherings
  • Online and social media spaces connected to our community
By participating in our community, you acknowledge that you have read, understand, and agree to follow this Code of Conduct.

Thank you for helping us keep our capoeira community welcoming, respectful, and strong.
