batizado & Troca de cordões

Batizado 2023 at a Glance

Berkeley Capoeira has the tradition of a batizado each Fall. At a batizado & troca de cordões ceremony, students are recognized for their hard work and training. We are excited to celebrate the incredible commitment of our capoeiristas! This year we are excited to have many wonderful teaching artists, including Mestra Tigresa, hailing all the way from North Carolina!

We’re also drawing on the vast talents of the incredible Bay Area community as well. Please join us for this unforgettable, magical celebration of an artform borne of resilience. Listed in alphabetical order:

This year’s batizado ceremony and preceding roda (Saturday night) are free for spectators

Thanks to a generous grant from The City of Berkeley, several workshops are open to the public and completely free of charge:

  • Saturday evening batizado and celebration rodas (free for spectators)
  • Sunday morning capoeira workshop (total beginner and all-levels options available)
  • Sunday mid-day Dance workshop with Tainah Damasceno

How does the “Ayé! Healing the Earth and Ourselves” Festival Relate to the Batizado?

The Berkeley Capoeira Collective applied for a Festival grant for “Ayé! Healing the Earth and Ourselves” from The City of  Berkeley with Fractured Atlas as a fiscal sponsor. This Cultural Arts Festival was planned to coincide with Batizado so the two events would complement the cultural richness of the other. On one hand, the festival events are open to the public and therefore also to batizado participants. On the other hand, several activities of the batizado will provide spectators an exciting insights into Afro-Braizilian arts in practice. There are also some workshops exclusively for batizado participants, that will not be open to the public.

What are your COVID precautions?

  • Masks are optional throughout the event. No judgement either way.
